Dr Joanna Berry is Chair of the North East Institute of Directors, a role she combines with her position as Associate Professor of entrepreneurship at Durham University Business School. Before taking on the position at Durham, Joanna was Director of External Relationships and Lecturer in Management at Newcastle University
Joanna is a Board member for the North East LEP Scale up North East programme and was Regional Chair of the Chartered Institute of Marketing for 7 years. Holding such prestigious positions has ensured that Joanna is very well known across the region.
What is less well known is the back-story, as an Oxford graduate, Joanna worked in South Africa and then moved to London in the era of the dot.com boom. Setting up her own business with a team of 25 and an impressive client list it must have been hard to see the dot.com bubble bursting but it did and took Joanna’s company with it. Fighting back from this was the only option for Joanna.
Dr Berry is one of a new type of academic, she brings with her real business experience, genuine stories of success and failure, passion for business in the real world and determination to drive change.
In her recent interview with Northern Insight Magazine Dr Berry refers to herself as a “Pracademic” a businessperson who brings reality into the theoretical world of academia.
We think there is going to be a lot to learn about Dr Berry when she speaks at our business lunch on March 25th, if you think you know her, you might just be surprised!
