Our December business lunch at Wynyard Hall started the festive season in very jovial mood with a speaker who is both highly entertaining and incredibly inspiring.
Barry Speker, OBE DL, maintains a legal career that has to date spanned 48 years and is far from being over. From his opening slide, Barry held the attention of the room, taking us back to his early days as a young lawyer, carbon copies, manual typewriters, twice daily post and double entry book keeping the life of a solicitor circa 1969.
Having worked in many areas of law, as was common practice in his early legal career, Barry recounted some interesting stories of his time as a young solicitor and then as a Judge. The requirement to survive long lunches at formidable venues such as the Blue Sky and the Turks Head were then a right of passage in the legal sector, bygone days of course.
Today he acts as a consultant for Sintons LLP in their healthcare group, healthcare law has been a specialism for many years. The run through he gave the room of some of his memorable cases raised plenty of varied reactions.
Barry is also very well known locally for his support for many charities including Barnardos, he holds several positions including a Governor of Heaton Manor School and through his extensive work with the Chinese community in Newcastle he has now become fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese.
Whilst delivering a very entertaining and enlightening presentation there was a serious side too. Over the course of a long and distinguished career Barry has presided over some key cases, is an incredible supporter of a wide range of local charities and continues to write key articles and practice law. The secret to Barry’s work ethic, clients always come first and time away from the computer and his 8 day week!
Huge thanks from Exclusive Business and Northern Insight to Barry for once again being our guest speaker and leaving us all inspired.
